Is my town served by ComEd?
Most of the area is, but not all of it. St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Naperville run their own municipal electric utilities, so outage reporting, service disconnects for a panel upgrade, and any utility rebate programs go through the city rather than ComEd. It catches a lot of homeowners out.
Do I need a permit for electrical work in the Chicago suburbs?
For anything that changes the service equipment or adds a circuit, yes — panel upgrades, EV charger circuits, and generator transfer switches all require a permit and inspection in every municipality we cover. Repairs to existing devices generally do not. Illinois licenses electrical contractors municipally rather than at state level, so requirements are set by your village or city.
How fast can someone come out?
For genuine emergencies, same-day is realistic and same-hour is often possible during business hours. Scheduled work like a panel upgrade or an EV charger install is typically booked days to weeks out, with permit review often setting the timeline rather than the electrician's availability.
