How to use these
Reading a quote, whatever the job
Most residential electrical quotes arrive as one line and a number, which makes them impossible to compare. When one is dramatically cheaper than the others it is almost never better value — it is usually missing two or three of the items below.
- Ask what is excluded, not what is included. Everyone lists what they will do. The gap between quotes lives in what nobody mentioned: the permit, the meter socket, the grounding, the drywall repair afterwards.
- Check the permit is a line item. Stated, not assumed. If it is absent, ask directly whether the job is being permitted at all — that is a different question from what it costs.
- Ask which problem you actually have. Undersized service or full panel? Deteriorated circuits or a whole-house rewire? Each pairing has a cheap answer and an expensive one, and the expensive one gets quoted by default.
- Get the scope in writing before you compare on price. Two numbers are only comparable once you know they describe the same work. Until then you are comparing a paragraph against a sentence.
